The Vehicle Recyclers' Association (VRA) is the UK's leading trade body for the vehicle recycling sector. It owns the VRA Certification scheme — the only nationally recognised independent quality standard for reclaimed automotive parts in the UK, used by insurers, fleet operators and repairers when specifying green parts.
Every VRA Certified yard holds a valid Environmental Permit, is a registered Scrap Metal Dealer, and complies with the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations 2003. An annual independent audit by VRA Certification Ltd verifies physical operations and documentation — certification can be suspended or revoked for non-compliance.
Parts Grading, Testing and Recording
Reclaimed parts are accurately identified, tested, and assigned a grade (A, B or C) based on condition, mileage and functionality before being listed for sale.
Authorised Treatment Facility
Certified yards hold an Environment Agency Environmental Permit and are registered Scrap Metal Dealers with their local authority, ensuring all depollution and dismantling is carried out legally.
Chain of Custody and Traceability
Every target part has an auditable chain of custody from donor vehicle through to the end customer, including vehicle source, mileage, and condition at time of removal.
Environmental Compliance
Facilities must comply with all relevant environmental legislation, holding valid Waste Carriers Licences and following strict protocols for battery, fuel, airbag and refrigerant disposal.
Annual Independent Audit
Certification is not self-declared. An independent annual audit reviews policies, procedures, and physical yard operations to verify ongoing compliance with the UK Standard.

VRA Certification (VRAC) means a recycler has been independently audited against the UK Standard for Reclaimed Parts from End-of-Life Vehicles. It provides buyers with assurance that parts have been properly identified, graded, tested, and sourced from a legally compliant, environmentally authorised facility.
The underlying environmental permit is issued and enforced by the Environment Agency (England), Natural Resources Wales, or SEPA (Scotland). The certification scheme itself is administered by VRA Certification Ltd, an independent body wholly owned by the VRA.
Non-certified sellers may operate without an environmental permit, may not test or grade parts accurately, and have no independent oversight. Certified recyclers are legally compliant, properly insured, and held to an auditable quality standard, reducing the risk of incorrect, untested, or illegally sourced parts.
Certified recyclers undergo a full audit annually. Certification can be suspended or revoked if a recycler fails to maintain the required standards between audits.
